Living in and around Bragg Creek means sharing the landscape with wildlife that has called this place home long before we did. Among the most iconic and misunderstood of our wild neighbours are bears.

Being Bear Smart isn’t about fear; it’s about respect, awareness, and taking responsibility for how our actions shape wildlife behaviour.

Bragg Creek sits within an important bear habitat. Both black bears and grizzly bears move through the area, especially during the spring and fall when they are actively foraging. These animals are intelligent, curious, and highly food- motivated. When bears gain access to human food sources, such as garbage, bird feeders, pet food, fruit trees, or livestock attractants, they quickly learn to associate people with easy meals. This is where problems begin, for both bears and humans.

Most human–bear conflicts are preventable. Bears that remain wild and wary of people are far less likely to pose a risk. Unfortunately, when bears become habituated to human spaces or food, the outcomes are often tragic: property damage, safety concerns, and in many cases, the bear being relocated or destroyed. Being Bear Smart is one of the most effective ways we can protect ourselves and the wildlife we value.

A Bear Smart community works together. Individual actions matter, but collective effort makes the difference. Properly securing attractants, managing waste responsibly, maintaining bear-resistant properties, and understanding seasonal bear behaviour all reduce the chances of conflict. It also means knowing how to respond calmly and appropriately if you encounter a bear, whether on a trail, near your home, or while recreating in the backcountry.

Education is key. The more we understand about bear biology, behaviour, and needs, the better equipped we are to coexist safely. Bears are not inherently aggressive; they simply do what they need to survive. Our role is to ensure that our presence does not unintentionally put them at risk.

Bragg Creek Wild Initiatives supports a proactive, informed approach to human–bear coexistence. Through community education, collaboration with local partners, and practical tools for residents and visitors, we aim to reduce conflict and foster a culture of shared responsibility. Being Bear Smart aligns with our broader commitment to protecting wildlife, preserving natural corridors, and maintaining the unique character of our community.

Below, you’ll find links to practical resources, guidelines, and further reading to help you become Bear Smart, whether you’re a long-time resident, a new landowner, or a visitor enjoying the beauty of the area. Together, we can ensure that Bragg Creek remains a place where people and bears can thrive, safely and respectfully.
